Fall season is moving in. Reminds one of the endless cycling of nature and of all life. I do get a little amused about comments like “save our planet.” Little doubt there is global warming, but we should remember that earth has been around a long time, and has so far comfortably survived giant meteorites and other massive catastrophes. It will no doubt be around long after humans and their destruction are gone and doing well, thank you.
I want to re-emphasize the value of self-hypnosis. I talk about this at almost every session, hoping to get patients to use it regularly. I recently came across an extensive analysis of studies done on the use of self-hypnosis. One of the items looked at was the estimated duration that patients used or continued their self-hypnosis during and after treatment. It presented a dim outlook when it came to continuing patient use of self-hypnosis. It estimated that only 20 to 35% of patients continued to use self-hypnosis beyond the actual treatment period, and with most studies, estimates were nearer the 20% range. This is similar to my own estimation of patient usage of this marvelous tool. Self-hypnosis is a great way to relax. Using the anchors for hypnosis that I give all the patients, one can use them and get into a hypnotic-like state quickly. Then one can use imagery and the other 4 senses to create pictures like on a screen, or can actually step into the scene and be a part of it. One can imagine what they will look, feel like, act like now or in the future. They can give themselves positive affirmations several times and generally can visualize or use one or more senses to picture themselves accomplishing their goals. Remember, numerous experiments have shown that the sub-conscious has difficulty distinguishing your real images from your imaginary ones, so you can usually substitute a very positive and favorable one for the less desirable real one. Some patients don’t image very well, but most can improve their imaging by a little practice, paying more attention to details.
I have recently revised my self-hypnosis hand-out and am enclosing it. Please consider using it as a powerful way to consistently improve your life.
Some thoughts for today:
- Just for today, I will live for this day only and not engage my entire life problems at once. I can do something for 12 hours that would be impossible if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.
- Just for today, I will be happy, for most people are about as happy as they decide to be. Just for today, I will strengthen my mind.
- Just for today, I will be agreeable.
- Stop focusing on what’s wrong and focus on what’s right. It’s all about where you focus.
- With the right attitude you can learn as much from failures as you do from success.
